Description
The Mountain Mead meadery (Medd Mynydd in Welsh) selects honeys and ingredients that add something to the flavour without overcomplicating things, producing some amazingly delicate meads. While the sweetness can vary from “dessert wine” up to and including “dry white”, all are light and smooth. Carefully balanced, these meads provide just the right blend of sweetness, aroma and acidity to be served as a light wine.
The Grugiar Ddu (Welsh for “Black Grouse”) mead is a light, spiced mead, a so-called metheglin. Fermented with cinnamon, vanilla, cloves and cardamom, the selection of spices give it a pleasant warmth and slight bite that still manages to be very smooth on the tongue. This mead can be served neat and chilled in a wine glass for a refreshing aromatic drink, or it can be gently heated and served with a slice of orange in the darker months. Heathens might even mix it with tonic or fruit juice, although we would limit ourselves to adding frozen fruits to avoid diluting the mead.
